Age of Conan music introduction

Composing the score for a game of such epic proportions as Age Of Conan – Hyborian Adventures is an adventure in itself. So, confronted with this daunting task, I couldn’t help but feel a bit overwhelmed at first. More than three years in the making, the score for the finished game totals to about 3 ½ hours of music.

When I was first asked to do the score for Norwegian developer Funcom’s new Conan game, it’s fair to say I was extremely excited; I had always been a Conan-fan and this was the kind of project I had always dreamed about doing as a composer. Early fall 2004 I took the bus down to Funcom’s Oslo headquarters and met up with game director, Gaute Godager, and Morten Sørlie who was the audio director at the time. Gaute talked about his vision for the project and how he imagined the score. This was at a very early stage in development, so at this point there was no visual content in the game for me to see. Instead I was sent back home with a copy of all the design documents. Back home I worked my way through all the hundreds of pages of storylines, designs and concept art as well as all the original Robert E. Howard Conan stories.
