“The Hyborian Sound” DateTime:9/27/2009 11:20:23 AM
In spite of the obvious importance of variation in style in the music for the individual cultures, it was important to retain a sense unity to the score. It was paramount that all the music felt as it belonged in the same universe, so that wherever you traveled, the music would always be recognizable as “Hyborian”. The basic ideas for what came to be known as the "Hyborian Sound” is that the music shouldn’t be too complex or refined. It should sound natural, timeless and primeval. The rhythms, melodies and harmonic language should be kept fairly simple and easily understandable. These are fairly wide parameters, so there’s also a more qualitative and vague assessment that tells you whether the music is “Conanesque” or not.
